The robot vacuums are no longer a staple of science fiction or The Jetsons – they are here and can be in your home in time for the holiday season!
The first generation have been with us and already departed taking their bugs and learning lessons with them back to the drawing board for the manufacturers at iRobot, Housmile, Deik, Eufy and Neato and been replaced by a smaller, sleeker, smarter and cheaper second generation range which places them firmly in the price range of the average consumer.
We looked at five of the most popular and reliable robotic vacuum cleaners in the US and Canada this year and compared their pros and cons for you to decide which is the best bet for you:
- Neato Robotics Botvac D5
- iRobot Roomba 650 Vacuum Cleaning Robot
- Eufy RoboVac 11 Robotic Vacuum Cleaner
- Deik MT-820 Robotic Vacuum Cleaner
- Housmile HO-811BR Robotic Vacuum Cleaner
The Neato app for the iPhone or Android is a great controller that lets the user start, stop, pause and check on the progress of the Botvac. The LaserSmart floor mapping and navigation system delivers a thorough methodical and logical cleaning system with digital precision and in a short timeframe. While the replacement parts are quite expensive the Botvac D5 is a great all round model that combine’s exceptional performance with convenient operation.
iRobot vacuums are probably the best known on the market and the Roomba is the market leader as well as being the best known. The most popular model on the market at the moment is the Roomba 650 which is designed with a removable brush for easy maintenance and to keep them hair and dirt free. One of the issues with the navigation system is that is sometimes has trouble detecting shade and has passed dark elements on a floor as it thinks they are holes and has cleverly avoided them.
It has a high capacity battery for a very long run time and is perfect for cleaning large areas. Is also adaptable for many surfaces including tiles, flat rugs or fluffy carpets. Ideal for people who want the cleaning to be done fast and efficiently.
The Eufy RoboVac 11 has a great remote control with a separate screen that allows the user to see settings and activate different modes and functions remotely without touching the hoover. The battery does take a long time to recharge however. The model overall has a good combination of functionality, high performance and at a reasonable price. It is a low height so can get under furniture when other models can’t and comes with a max cleaning mode to remove ingrained or stubborn stains from carpets.
The Deik MT-820 has a very large 0.9 litre dust collection bin which can hold a day’s worth of dust after a long clean so you won’t have to worry about stopping and emptying it on a regular basis. This model also comes equipped with a water tank which means that it can also mop certain surfaces as well as vacuuming. The instructions could be clearer and will need to be carefully read before operation.
This is a great buy for people who live in small spaces. It is also one of the quieter models with all necessary cleaning modes and an easy to use controller.
The Housmile HO-811 has a standard HEPA filter that will trap 99.97% of dust particles helping to make it a good purchase for people with allergies or other breathing issues. The device also comes with an AC power adapter, a cleaning tool, two additional filters, four side brushes, a screwer, four screws and a Li-ion battery. This model doesn’t have the ability to schedule regular daily clean ups and has to be set in motion manually.
This is one of the most cost effective robotic vacuum cleaners on the market and is ideal for customers who would like to experience the benefits the device can bring but doesn’t have hundreds of dollars to spend on the top of the range models that exist.
Most of the units that were looked at come with at least a year’s warranty as well as a minimum of 90 minutes run time in each session. Cleaning area can vary depending on model and most have either automatic cleaning patterns or the ability to pre schedule a cleaning pattern in advance.
All will work on any hard floor or carpeted surface and have HEPA standard or other high performance filters to ensure cleaner air after they have completed their daily patrol route.
If you are planning on taking the leap into the 21st century you were promised in comic books and science fiction movies then you have a great selection of robotic vacuum cleaners to take you there this holiday season!
